Kinderzeche

Kinderzeche is a festival in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria, Germany, to honor the children who saved the town during the Thirty Years' War of 1618-48. In 1632, according to legend, as Swedish troops rode into town, a small band of children appeared before the commander and asked for his mercy. The commander's heart softened, and he spared the town. The celebration today is a reenactment of the event, with participants in costumes of 17th-century town councilors and soldiers. During the 30 Years War (1618 - 1648) broad parts of Germany were destroyed, while the medieval city of Dinkelsbühl was spared. This is because of the children of Dinkelsbühl begged favour with the Swedish colonel. For the past 100 years or so Dinkelsbühl has celebrated its delivery with a festival where the whole story is performed again. Even today the city continues to show its grateful appreciation for their help by giving coloured bags of sweets to all the children taking part in the procession.

Youtube video about the Dinkelsbühl festival, in German.
But the pictures can be understood without German.
The historical event took place during the Thirty Years' War,
in the year 1632.
