personate

(verb) Pretend to be someone you are not; sometimes with fraudulent intentions.

Synonyms: impersonate, pose

Usage: It had been agreed that, in their escape, she was to personate the character of a Creole lady, and Emmeline that of her servant.

Someone on this forum sometimes seem to personate someone.

Impersonate not personate. Personate as a verb seems very awkward.

Impersonate may be more in usage, but both are correct and synonymical.

I agree Ellenrita. I would not use "personate" for the very reason you stated.
