Has anybody ever heard of it? I don't have much information, only that it has been caught from „a tainted bag of feed”. It is mid-XIX century in the US South.

I have never heard about it before -
You have maybe read about it in "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead ??
which is a work of fiction, however it should also be noted that in the XIXth century there were several diseases which do not not correspond to any modern equivalent. A third alternative is that the person is inventing a new contageous disease using the term french pox as template ( = syphilis / small pox = variola minor - chicken pox = varicella zost )

Yes, I did find it in Whitehead. It's curious there's no other reference to it on the net, so I wouldn't wonder if it were his concoction. Or maybe he has read about it in some old papers, who knows?
