Even though it's true there's a small problem: only a sound mind can take care of the sense. Vicious circle?

"Even though it's true there's a small problem: only a sound mind can take care of the sense. Vicious circle? " : This is typically the sort of pun that would be lost in translation — a matter of sound, again.

Life itself is kinda a pun if you take notice how similar birth and death are. Isn't it amusing, lady?

Not true for a non-native speaker. I know exactly what I am going to express but sometimes struggle to say it.

there was a popular saying in Victorian England "Take care of the pence, and the pounds will take care of themselves," meaning that you will have enough money for big things if you don't overspend on trifles. Carroll's version means that if you know what you want to say, (take care of the sense), then you will easily find a way to say it, (the sounds will take care of themselves).

Lewis Carroll's quotation reminds me of what Nicolas Boileau wrote in "L'art poétique"(1674):

Ce que l'on conçoit bien s'énonce clairement,
Et les mots pour le dire arrivent aisément.

Which might be translated as :

What is well thought out can be clearly enunciated,
And the words to express it comme readily to mind.

Thanks for that. I've been waiting for someone to explain what this quote means. Very good.

Don't let the past remind you of what you are not now

Thanks, Dr.M. I missed that one because I grew up using 'pennies' in that phrase so didn't make the connection.

@ Christine - happy birthday Alice ! planning a tea party ? ( don't invite rabbits - they always show up late anyway...)

You know it’s a beautiful day when even the cacophony of a crow sounds like the sweet song of a robin.

It's true it is a pun. However, Carroll's statement also has sense. He was a skilled linguist. He understood that when reading and spelling meaning comes before an understanding of the phonemes ( speech sounds). We learn to read and spell the words we already know and use. We spell meaning by writing morphemes, the smallest units in language with meaning.
