It was a kind of glade in the forest, made by a fall; seedlings were already starting up to struggle for the vacant space; and beyond, the dense growth of stems and twining vines and splashes of fungus and flowers closed in again.

What does the "fall" here mean? I thought it's a waterfall, but then realized the part after about seedling growing wouldn't make sense.

A fall.

Something had fallen.

A big tree had fallen, creating a clearing with sunlight where seedlings could grow.
A tree-fall.

The circle of life.
Something has to die to make room for new things to grow - a 'vacancy'.
