Why is it that with all the advanced sound quality technology, cell phones continue to be wretchedly bad at voice quality? And a trillion times worse at translating hold music into sound! Gah! This is my only now.

The main thing is the size of the speakers. The design of them is much improved on the speakers/earpieces of thirty years ago - but you can't get good quality sound from such a small mass. A mobile phone speaker is probably not much more than half an inch wide. If you look at studio speakers or those of real hi-fi enthusiasts, they're HUGE. Even the things they call hi-fi speakers for normal use are not satisfactory for some specialists: You can put thick strings on a guitar so that it plays bass notes - but it doesn't sound like a real double bass - the pitch is the same, but the quality is not there. Wyrd bið ful aræd - bull!

I don't know about you but I'm happy with the quality of sound I receive when I'm making a phone call, and I don't even own the 'nice' phone, just a normal Samsung from one of the old series. I get very clear sound, especially when using earphones, that at times it feels like I'm bipolar and someone is talking in my head
Sometimes however, it does pick up the background noise a little too well that it could sound as if the person on the other end is knocking down a drum set.
What do you mean by 'translating hold music into sound', though? I'm afraid I don't understand the term.
The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.

The technology is impressive, but ultimately voice quality is limited by the bandwidth (bit rate) of the cellular channel, which in turn is limited by economics - that is, by the number of conversations that can be carried simultaneously by a fairly costly radio spectrum. It's unlikely to improve given current bandwidth/spectrum constraints. And physics.
