Can one say
a. I like to be fashionable, but not that fashionable. Those shoes are too fashionable for me.
b. I like to be fashionable, but not that much. Those shoes are too fashionable for me.

?

My feeling is that (b) doesn't really work. I think it means
e. I like to be fashionable I don't like that much to be fashionable.

That could be used in another context. But it doesn't work here.

Many thanks.

They could work, but there are some ideas that have to be "understood". By that I mean the words, "but not that much" represent the shoes and the degree of desire.

For example, if two people are looking at a pair of shoes and these words are said, the idea conveyed is that the shoes are not attractive to one of them, even though the shoes are supposed to be fashionable. And "not that much" means "my desire to be fashionable is not that strong".

So one person is saying they like to be fashionable, but not so much (their desire to be fashionable is not so strong) that they would wear those shoes.

A great many people will think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices. ~ William James ~

Thank you so much!

Apparently, when the question is clear, the answer is clear!

Brilliant reply. Extremely clear and to the point.

I guess I learned two lessons here!

Many thanks.
