I am reading about computer networking. I came across the following on the YouTube video:

The application layer of OSI model provides network processes to the applications.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pBqgLwfzBzQ

I am just interested to know the exact meaning of "processes" in "network processes".

We also use "chemical processes", "physiological processes etc.

Like "services" this word also has multiple and overlapping meaning.

Thanks.

You're right.

The definition of 'process' is broad and vague, as it can apply to ANY action which can be broken down into smaller steps. All the definitions seem to agree that a process has a series of steps.

process n
1. a series of actions that produce a change or development: the process of digestion.

Even if you limit your ideas just to the field of computing, "process" (and "processes") can mean anything:
- the small task of putting a letter on the screen when I hit a key
- the action of saving a whole page
- a program (like Word or Excel) (otherwise known as an "app")

As your sentence talks about applying network processes to apps, it would seem that it means the smaller individual actions (not the whole program).

Examples I can think of which might be 'network processes' would be:
- inserting a hyperlink into a sentence
- inserting an image , stored "in the cloud" into a text page
- the action of temporarily downloading another app, using it, saving the result and then deleting the app
- the action of temporarily uploading your data to a program in another server, using that program, then downloading the result

I suppose, basically, you could define "network process" as:
a series of actions which produce a change or development and which involve more than one isolated computer.
