I was now recovered from my surprise, and began to look round me, when I found the cave was but very small—that is to say, it might be about twelve feet over, but in no manner of shape, neither round nor square, no hands having ever been employed in making it but those of mere Nature.

-Robinson Crusoe

Is he referring to the depth of the cave, or the width of it? We can rule out the height, since he previously said he can stand upright without trouble.

Hi vkhu

I think this is an estimate of the size of an irregularly-shaped cave - about 12 feet across or so.
