They could hardly be seen to turn down a chance to eject the government. But the truth is that for many in the Labour Party, the official opposition, the election is uncomfortably timed. Labour trails the Tories in the polls by more than 20 percentage points (see chart below), thanks mainly to the unpopularity of its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, an uncharismatic far-leftist who was chosen with enthusiasm by the party’s members in 2015, and again in 2016, but who fails to appeal to voters more widely. Bookmakers are giving odds as long as ten to one of Labour winning more seats than the Conservatives.

Could someone please paraphrase the bold part?

Bookmakers are those who take bets. Odds is the ratio of the likelyhood of something to happen. So, here the bookmakers give you ten bucks for your one if the Labour Party wins the elections.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

What does "as long as" suggest here?

It is a betting term.

"Long odds" means that the ratio is large.

Odds of two-to-one (you pay one pound if you lose, but win two pounds if you win) are not "long odds".
Odds of ten to one would be called long odds - the bookies are offering odd of eight-to-one or nine-to-one - or odds as long as ten-to-one. The ratio can become as big as ten-to-one.

It is also possible to get odds such as 1/4 meaning that for every £4 that you bet you win £1 back, these are often called short odds bets.

Such odds are offered when the bookmakers have decided that something is pretty certain to happen, but still might not occur.

A gambler can make money as their original stake is returned along with their winnings so if the were to bet £100 then they would win £25 but the bookmakers would return to them £125.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.
