Over the years I've posted a lot of excellent recordings on YouTube, but I was surprised when this one quickly got over a half-million hits. I'm sharing it because it's not the kind of thing that even most classical music lovers are familiar with. It features the great lute player and pedagogue Michael Schaeffer, who died young (he made only a couple of recordings). French Baroque music is characterized by highly rational formal procedures, while at the same time there is an emphasis on harmonic richness and sensuality, and also arresting rhythmic figures. For a good example listen to the Gigue from the Gallot suite, at 24:05 into the video.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.
