News reports abound of homeless people on the streets, and families with no fixed abode living in vehicles, or else crammed into small apartments and carsheds. Aljzeera News featured this a while back. The shortage of affordable rental accommodation due to high demand, due to increased immigration quotas, and also as an effect of house purchasing beyond the reach of so many is blamed.

In Auckland employers are having to offset high accommodation costs with guaranteed higher wages and salaries to attract employees to the area.
