On February 1, the Department of Justice had filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit entitled "Consent motion to hold proceedings in abeyance for 60 days".

Please help me understand the meaning of abeyance.

Thank you

Prince

it means suspend ... delay ...

to "hold proceedings in abeyance for 60 days" means delaying court proceedings for 60 days

Keep pending. Generally requested when the action is connected with the happening or non-happening of some other event. For example, a penalty for concealment of income is directly connected with the outcome of an appeal of the amount of income concealed. If appellate authority accepts the appeal and observes that nothing was concealed, the resultant penalty is not leviable. If he rejects the appeal the penalty may become leviable.
In such cases, an application, with a request, to keep the penalty proceedings in abeyance, till the appeal is decided, is submitted to the authority.
