NOT A TEACHER

Dear Fellow Learners:

I just heard this expression this morning, so I wanted to share it with you in case you have not heard it before.

Raul and Tony were high school (secondary school) classmates.

For some reason, Raul treated Tony very badly while they were in high school.

Then after graduation, Raul went to college (university) in California.

Tony went to a famous university in England.

Then when Raul was 30 years old, he secured an interview for an important job.

When he walked into the office for his interview, who do you think was the interviewer?

Yes, you're right: It was Tony, the person who(m) he had treated badly 12 years earlier!

Raul almost fainted.

Raul: I just want to apologize for treating you so badly back in high school. I will understand it if you don't want to interview me.

Tony (smiling): Don't worry, Raul. That is water under the bridge.

Raul: Do you mean it?

Tony: Absolutely. What happened then is history. I don't care about it. It's now 2017, and I want the best person for the job. I have studied your work record since you (were) graduated from college, and I like what I see. Congratulations! You've got the job!

A good metaphor.

I've heard it in several ways:
"That's water under the bridge", as you mentioned
"A lot of water has gone under the bridge since . . ."
"A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then"
"There's been a lot of water under the bridge since . . ."

But just now, when I was looking for examples, I found that some people even use it in the future (I've never heard it like this before):
"I suppose there will be a lot of water under the bridge before we meet again."

Good expression to learn again!
Tony is an amazing guy!

Thanks, Parser!

You are right, Frosty.

Tony put the welfare of his company ahead of any personal considerations.

As you implied, Tony is a person of (good) character.

All this means is that a lot of time has past and I no longer care about what might have happened at that time -- because of the passage of time.

Strange. TFD emphasizes a different facet. It's not that "time has passed and everything's forgotten" but "time has passed and nothing can be changed":

An excellent metaphor TheParser....

Frosty X Rime wrote that 'Tony is an amazing guy', and I agree...it means Tony has a FORGIVING spirit...he didn't reward 'Evil for Evil'...he is amazing!

Presumably Raul was considered to be competent for the job.

After a while, he turned out to be uselesss and fired regardless of the water.

After the decision was made, the company considered the matter water under the bridge.

I think both definitions are used, the Cambridge dictionary notes that in BrE it means:
Quote:
problems that someone has had in the past that they do not worry about because they happened a long time ago and cannot now be changed:

In their definition for AmE it's:
Quote:
something that happened in the past and cannot now be changed:

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

Good morning to Wilmar, XX, Hedy, Almo, and Sarriesfan.

Thanks for the informative contributions.

Have a nice day!

It's now spring here in sunny Southern California.

Today is expected to reach about 90 degrees.

In fact, Tony had never forgotten Raul. He created the job, headhunted Raul, gave him the job, invited him on the corporate team-building adventure. He even volunteered to attach the bungee cord.

And that despite the fact that Tony did have a good pretext for not hiring Raul. The fact that Raul "almost fainted" at seeing his interviewer would have been a great excuse for disqualifying him from an "important job"..

My neighbors and library friends (many of whom are TFD "guests") insisted that I give the 9 contributors to this thread a shoutout (a note of appreciation).

You nine people were very NICE, INFORMATIVE, and even HUMOROUS.

This thread was definitely one of the most fun (and funniest) threads in which I have ever participated.

Thanks again, and have a great day!
