Don't talk to me. Talk to my boss direct/directly.

Which is the correct word?

Thanks.

Koh Elaine: My understanding of grammar is that the correct sentence would be: "Talk to my boss directly" as the word is being used as adverb (the tip I was given in school is if you ask how something is to be done (how? directly) then you need to use an adverb (adverbs typically, but not always, end in "ly"). Someone else may give you a more technical grammatical explanation --- or disagree with me --- but this is my simple, handy way for figuring out which form of the word in this kind of usage to use.

As mac says, it is an adverb, so it is 'directly'.

Speak to him directly.
Speak to him politely.

However, in colloquial speech, the use of some adjectives for adverbs is quite common, so it does not feel like a glaring mistake for a native speaker to say 'speak to him direct'. However, it is wrong, grammatically.

I do believe it would sound wrong to most native AmE speakers.
