This was loaned to me a few years ago for me identify it.

I've gotten nowhere.

I thought that maybe someone here could identify the writing, or maybe even know what this is.

Maybe it will help, but each below photo is actually a link to a larger version of that photo.

Someone once suggested that it might be a stamp, so here's the sides of the largest box with the images reversed.

Thanks!

These are indeed Chinese characters, but of ancient style (almost like inscriptions on oracle bones). I wish I could help but these are beyond my ability of recognization.

These Chinese characters are "小篆"(Small Seal Script) ,an archaic form of Chinese calligraphy. Used in Qin dystany . Modern Chinese can't recognized them . I will ask in the Chinese BBS .

Thanks!

I'm going to push my luck here...

He also had a weird medal regarding Xiangqi that he posted to a Facebook Group, looking for info.

Maybe you could ask in your bbs about it as well?

That would be so awesome!!!! :D

My English is terrible and I hope you can barely understand what I mean . The "boxes" calls Combined copper seals(组合套铜印章).

The last picture you upload that contains four sentences and they have rich poetic flavor (It means that they read like ancient Chinese sentences.)
Top left:
梅阁留春荷亭销夏自娱而已
Plum梅 pavilion阁 saving留 the Spring春 ,Lotus荷 pavilion亭 prevents销 the Summer夏 . It's just而已 Self-entertainment自娱 (Or recreation).
Top right:
莺边按谱花前觅(uncertain)句
Orioles莺 following按 the music score谱 looking觅 for verse句 in front前 of the flowers花.
Lower left:
读未见书如逢良友 读已见书如遇故人
Reading读 a book书 never未 seen见 before is like如 encountering逢 a good良 friend友 . Reading读 a book书 already已 known见 is like如 meeting遇 a old故 friend人 .
Lower right:
热肠冷面傲骨平心
Warm heart with cold face , proud bone with peace mind .
In ancient Chinese one word may symbolizes another abstract thing so I translate "hot intestine热肠" to "warm heart" or maybe "brave gut(no idea if it makes sense ' cause my English is not good)" .
The "proud bone傲骨" is better to translate to "The lofty and unyielding character" ,"bone" in ancient China symbolizes the strong character of male .
