It is true that a plane flying from NYC to LA will take slightly more time in comparison to a plane flying at the same speed and route from LA to NYC?

I'd have guessed the other way around as it's uphill from LA to NYC Whistle

Can you expand on what you are asking, or give a source for the theory? Are you sure you are not confusing regional time differences with flight duration?

Even the same direction flights may take different times:

It's not only the distance that matters.

Is this just about the 3 hours difference due to different time zones?

Four things to consider:
1) Time-zones
2) Prevailing winds
3) Aircraft types
4) Exaggerated flight duration by airlines to improve their "on-time performance"

You beat me to the punch, Towan! This is the list to consider the difference in flight times!

The answer is no from reading posts here if you are asking "Does the rotation of the earth dramatically affect airplane flight time?"

My understanding is the plane is within the atmosphere of the earth, it will remain at the same spot without flying (either westward or eastward). So the effect of the turn of the earth on the plane is the same whether it flies east or west. The plane TURNS with the earth. It will have to overcome the same obstacle (either flying from A to B or flying from B to A) to reach its destination without jet-stream.

The major affect on aircraft travel, times is the Jet Stream.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_stream

An aircraft traveling from LA to NYC can plan its journey in such a way that it takes advantage of the flow of air currents in the atmosphere which travel from the West to the East in particular zones and decrease their travel time and fuel usage.

Similarly the flight time from America to the UK is a lot shorter than the other way around.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

It is exciting to see TFDer's answer thread so quickly and efficiently. I am duly impress.

Ashwin Joshi, whomever may be considering this arduous trip must really need to be there.....
And thanks to TFDers, the question was answered quite informatively....this is what TFDer-friends are for!

Great job! Listening..., Gary 98, towan52], and Xap6X (sorry the abbreviation), for providing other details....awesome.

Now, if all TFDers could play nice in the sandbox...we'd all be OK

Look! There indeed is a difference of about 30 minutes.

And they say it's trade winds.

Actually it's 'Supply and Demand' at play here, (I'm speaking of the cost not just of time)....there may be a demand to travel to NYC....I'd say it's worth it!

The question was not about the price but about the difference in time which is explicitly stated in the second column on both pictures.

What's your point? If it didn't bother the poster, Ashwin Joshi, don't sweat it...maybe it's TMI for you.
