I do not read (or understand) poetry, but I thought it my duty (as a journalist manqué) to alert any member/guest who is interested in Mr. Housman's famous poem that you will like an article entitled "Lethal Pastoral" by Paul Keegan in the November 17, 2016, issue of the London Review of Books.

Mr. Keegan reviews a new book entitled Housman Country: Into the Heart of England by Peter Parker.

Quoted from Wikipedia:

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
‘Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;

Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.’
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
‘The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
’Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.’
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

In the end, there was nothing.

Robert Cormier's young adult books pointed me to A Shropshire Lad, which also deals with adolescence etc. I was expecting much more opaque writing and was glad to find a lot of stuff that resonated quickly without seeming too simple.

I enjoyed his other poems too but Shropshire Lad isn't overly taxing. I recommend it to all who might be curious.

I particularly enjoy the idiom section of this fine website.
