Does Quantum Mechanics play a role inside a living cell?

Although it is still speculative, Jim al Khalili, a nuclear physicist from quantum physics, feels that in the next decade it will be shown that Quantum Biology concepts pervade life. He feels it is based on solid science and is exciting. He gives three examples in this TED TALK and one is that it can explain how birds navigate.

He co-authors a book, "Life on the Edge".

Hi Hope123,

What a fascinating topic! What little I already know about quantum theory leads me to believe that I'm going to love this TED talk. Thanks for the posting.

Actually, it's hard to imagine that nature would not have found uses for quantum effects. After all, they are a part of the physical world, and they must lead to results that might prove important in unforeseen ways.

The other way around: quantum mechanical phenomena has evolved into yucky squishy living things. Tunneling and entanglement must be just 2 properties of particles of a million more we don't know about. At first human looked for an explanation of this world in bigger objects like planets (astrology) and God. Now scientist look for an explanation in smaller things: atoms, quarks (science). If a witch says she can be at 2 places at the same time, she's insane, but if a scientist say an enzyme disappears here and appears there, he's sound.
Anyway, if gravity of the milky way cannot be fully explained by the mass of the stars in it, and feelings and thoughts cannot be fully explained by neural pathways, chances are DNA mutations could not be explained by all the marvelous phenomena of quantum physics even if we knew them all, as above so below.
