Hello,

I'm only just doing the first steps in studying French.

If i'm not mistaken there are rules in French like this.

Letters xx/xxx/xxxx when in the beginning/middle/end of the word

or under the other such and such conditions are ALWAYS read this way.

So knowing these rules we can pronounce any word and be sure we did it correctly.

Is there a comprehensive list of such rules, books, web, anything where they are all compiled?

Hello marksman,
Welcome aboard and congratulations for your efforts in taking up French.
About French pronunciation, I'm afraid the Wikipedia article is all I can think of. It's quite detailed but in French (but you can find the English and Russian artiles in the column on the left).
Bon courage, it's my mother tongue but I know it's quite difficult to memorise all the rules and exceptions.
