Hi all,

I want to know why there is 'e' added to the ending of the ´schloss´ and 'könig' gains a tail 's' in the fragment
'nahe bei dem Schlosse des königs'.

The full sentence is as below:

Nahe bei dem Schlosse des königs lag ein großer,dunkler Wald, und in dem Walde, unter einer alten Linde war ein Brunnen.

Danke schön im Voraus,

And another one. There is 'e' added to 'Wald' as well in 'in dem Walde'. I wish to know what that is for.

Both 'bei dem Schlosse' and *in dem Walde' are perfectly normal examples of the dative case. In everyday language, the 'e' endingg is frequently left out.

'des Königs' is the genitive 's', similar to "the king's" in English.

Hi, the e corresponds to the dative endings for a group of masculine nouns, but now that's old-fashioned and that ending is dropped in "modern" German. The s is the ending that corresponds to the genitive case of most masculine nouns.
