Though I´ve studied English for many years, my mother tongue being Spanish, I still find some diffuculties in understanding words, especially in songs. So I am very fond of the song: HURT by Jonny Cash and when attemting to copy the song I find some incomprehensible words, those being the ones that followed after this lyrics: I wear this crown of thorns upon ....., can´t understand what´s next. If anyone has the entire song written and could post it much better. Thanks in advance.

I used Google and came up with this: I hurt myself today to see if I still feel I focus on the pain the only thing that's real the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting try to kill it all away but I remember everything what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end and you could have it all my empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of thorns upon my liar's chair full of broken thoughts I cannot repair beneath the stains of time the feelings disappear you are someone else I am still right here what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end and you could have it all my empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt if I could start again a million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way YouTube-Johnny Cash 'Hurt'

Aaah - Song lyrics. How many of us have "adapted" words to songs we seem to have known & loved for years. I remember a few years ago my local radio station asking for the listeners to offer up their "versions" of popular songs and it would seem that there are many of us out there who enjoy changing lyrics & to a certain extent, even preferring them! Here in Australia one of the favoutites lyric adaptations is "...it's a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll!" rather than the correct words of "It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll"! Often this is just because we can't even understand the correct words or is it just that it's the common (wo)man's way of artistic creation (after all we can't all be Lennon & McCartney!).

That's right Grammargeek. It IS a long way to the shop if you wanna sausage roll. It's well known they are the incorrect lyrics, but damn it's a funny substitute.

Note: Hurt was performed by Cash, but it was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Cash changed some of the lyrics in his version.

I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan myself. I love Depeche Mode too, so imagine my surprise when I found out J.C. covered Personal Jesus. Do check it out, it's beyond awesome "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too" - Voltaire

Do check it out, it's beyond awesome I thought it was the other way around (Johnny Cash writing both songs) and I was gonna joke about Marilyn Manson actually being the Personal Jesus composer. I'm glad I checked my facts before making an utter fool of myself... (actually, come to think of it, I probably knew the correct facts at some point, but they were completely buried in my brain)

It was written by Trent Reznor and published in 1994 on The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. Not sure if it was published elsewhere first.

But he was such a badass that he covered whatever he wanted. Very Chuck Norrissy :-P "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too" - Voltaire

I'd like to add that, if you haven't seen it, the video for the Johnny Cash version is amazingly moving.
