Thank you Songbird, certainly one of his best narratives. One of the "saints" of science, one who has journeyed to a confrontation with immensity, returns with a rational basis for why we must shed the ways of the past, and find new ways into the future.
Question authority, before it questions you. How do you know, that you know, what you know?

Beautiful, Songbird. Thanks. It sure puts things into perspective as we scurry around on earth like ants in an ant hill.
With men like Carl Sagan and David Suzuki around, maybe mankind has a chance to make enough changes to our lifestyles to make a difference. Before all the Y chromosomes disappear - horrendous thought!

This Sagan passage is as close as I get to a mystical experience; deeply moving and very profound. In fact it's so imprinted in my mind that I would have guessed it was first heard in my childhood. I'm surprised it's only 22 years ago.
Arguing with a creationist is like playing chess with a pigeon. It'll knock over the pieces, crap on the board, and fly back to it's flock to claim victory.

Yes Carl Sagan said this:
An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid.[47][48]
Revealing I think.

Revealing I think. It reveals that Sagan vocalised many personal opinions throughout his life. It reveals he is often quoted (we've already established he is often mis-quoted) Other than that it reveals nothing much. Arguing with a creationist is like playing chess with a pigeon. It'll knock over the pieces, crap on the board, and fly back to it's flock to claim victory.

Sagan was generally, though not particularly zealously, against what is sometimes called pseudoskepticism. That is, the stand that all claims that might be classified as pseudoscientific are automatically assumed to be invalid. See, for instance, this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zetetics
