There was a security scare on Australia Day, with both the PM and the Opisition Leader, at the same function at the

same time, that should have bee scary enough.

The PM's press sec created an incident with miss repeating something the Opp Leader was supposed to have said, the miss information grew, as it does.

The PM's security guards wisked her into a car, sounds simple?

Not so, the security guard got her in a head lock, elbow around the neck etc, and hurried her so much, she lost a shoe.

The offending shoes was up to $2k on eBay before some one felt it was inappropriate.

A storm in a tea cup, over reaction?

I just cant imagine President Obama in a head lock, no matter how hard try.

Just another interesting Australia Day.

I think $2k is inappropriate too though I might bid one. I saw the incident and was impressed. Overseas politicians seem to be a lot livelier than our lot.

Nope, no head-lock for President Obama (so far), but plenty of good ole' fashioned disrespect:

Most recently, Gov of Arizona wagging her ignorant finger at him as though she had the authority to scold the President.

At a State of the Union speech, a Rep from South Carolina (somehow, that figures) yelling out during the speech "you lie!".

An unprecedented level of disrespect, but, no headlock yet.

No head lock here too.

I saw the pictures of the moment in the newspapers here, inwhich the Prime 'Sandrella' was trying to escape from her "12'O clock".

Interesting!

Nothing like being prepared for your next head-lock.
When I read this, I thought of Mrs. Thatcher in a head-lock. Who would have had the nerve?

Then, I saw the Pakistani foreign minister, Hina Rabbani, on television. Is she the world's most beautiful politician? Head-lock, or what?

Tov -
are The Chaser's still pursuing their War on Everything? Sure it wasn't one of them?

Nah, just kidding. Am going to surf around a little and see if I can get not just a visual but see what people had to say about it. Simply cannot imagine how they have justified this indignity?

PS I was shocked to discover that not one of my students could name the "President"(!) of Australia recently so I gave them a homework task to look her up, but even that didn't do much good. So I made up a chant which I gave them to repeat again and again. So now, though the average Chinese still might not have a clue who Julia Gillard is, there's a whole bunch of people in Zhejiang Province who will never forget!

Hi Romany, this event happened in a restaurant near Parliament House when the PM was giving out some awards/medals[?].
The Leader of Opposition, Tony Abbott, was in attendance and mentioned the "tent embassy" of the Aborigines, with words to the affect that more needs to be done about it[the meaning open to interpretation!]. One of Gillard's aides phoned someone at the tent embassy with an incorrect version[insinuating he said it should be removed!] and mentioning that Abbott was in the restaurant with Gillard.Brick wall
An aroused crowd formed outside the building which had expansive glass windows, and, security were of the opinion that they would shatter under the pressure of this mob. That is when it was decided to evacuate Gillard and Abbott.
It was during this process of moving from the building to the cars that the incident occurred. Was actually quite ugly.
Gillard's aide was sacked and there may have been another implicated with further action pending.
The tent embassy [not far from restaurant] has been illegally on the lawns of Parliament House for 40 years but has been tolerated as there has never been any real trouble. It is more an ongoing protest by the Indigenous people who oppose the occupation of Australia by "outsiders".

One comment made was that Gillard should give the 'other shoe' to the woman who 'picked up' the lost one.Whistle

The Chasers have sort of faded away Romany. They, by memory, had court action taken against them for one of their outrageous acts which took the 'smile of their dial' and subdued them somewhat.

Don't know if this will open for you where you are Romany. The link is not working properlyBrick wall If you left click on it and it opens on a page with small pictures, leave that page open and click on back arrow at top left of toolbar [may need 2 clicks] and it should open.Anxious

Jeez, Ray, what a kerfuffle! Thank you so much much for posting that: no radio, no tv...she could have been bloody assassinated and we probably wouldn't know about it!

I had a friend, a wonderful human being - who was invited to go up to Tent City every year at the opening of Parliament to lead the mob of young blokes he had rescued from the streets and turned into a Traditional Dance group. Seeing all that mess going on in the place where Fred used to spread his message of hope and dignity saddened me. (Fred died - in the middle of a dance - three years after I came here. )

So The Chasers got chased off the screen at last, huh? Didn't they make a person cringe sometimes? So...Rove McMannus still around?

Truely there was a head lock, just not in those photographs.

I personally feel the security guards must have been having an Andy Wahol moment.

Julia was born in Wales, immigrated to Australia with her parents.

Lives in the Lodge with her boyfriend, a hair dresser.

No plans that we know of for a wedding date.

First female Australian PM.

She does have a little dog, who is an escape artist.

Romany, the Chasers caused such embaracment to the real Security Guards, was it Chaneys visit or some heads of the Commomwealth Countries???.

Do remember they were escorting a car from a country that wasnt part of the function & and driving a bloke dressed as Ossama the passed.

Lucky they werent shot, and all for comedy!

Sorry, I still dont have spell check on this new thing'a'me.

There are stories about how quickly the Secret Service are capable (and apparently, willing and empowered) to whisk the President away should there be a threat. It seems two or more agents will flank him and "his feet might even touch the ground for a moment" as they manhandle him away to AF1 to be flown around until the danger has passed.

It's not the kind of thing one wants to see on camera, though. It just doesn't speak well of anyone involved. It makes the leader look weak, the protection services look paranoid and the people being threatened out to be terrorists. Bad for nearly everyone except maybe for those who oppose the political leader... and it's a pretty dicey game for them. If one gets caught using such a tactic it's likely to result in political exile at the very least.
