A shoe maker made a big, in fact, very big shoe for promotion purpose.

He put that shoe out of his shoe shop and wrote;

1. "Free for whom it fits."

A customer pointed out that it should read;

2. "Free to whom it fits."

Which one is more suitable? Or any other suggestion............

Clever. I'd pay for the first one but the second one sounds more natural.

EDIT: Welcome back, Kaleem!

Given for free to whom it fits.

I'd get a fit if I saw this sign.
I mean, really, who would want ONE shoe? Most people need two.

It's that old marketing trick again, 'Get one for the price of two!'

"free to whomever it fits"

I prefer "whomever" to "whom" in this sentence, although I admit it is splitting hairs. Either "for" or "to" are OK by me.

I was wondering how to keep in step with this post but I did
not want to lace it with puns.

If the shoe is big enough you only need one ;-)
