I have never seen the Australian dollar at 99c to the US dollar, as it was today.

What does this mean? That the US dollar is too devalued? Think

Yeah, the weakening of the US dollar is causing quite a stir. Our Rand here in South Africa is looking a lot stronger these days.

This is the highest the Aus$ has been to US$, in 27 years.

Is the US$ being manipulated from Asia?

This gain has reduced the value of our exports, something to ponder on?

Being a fan of Terry Pratchett (Canadian ;-) I just found out that in the Discworld novel, "The Last Continent", Rincewind inadvertently invents Vegemite, or something very similar.

You'll have to get used to asking for the McVegimite Meal. Dancing I got to work with the Aussie Air Force at the Lockheed plant in Georgia, USA. They actually had vegimite at their coffee bar at the office. Big fans of instant coffee they are. Wouldn't survive here in the northwest except that they could afford anything with their big Aussie dollars!

I drink instant coffee (i could afford peculated) and I love vegemite, grew up on it. Quite nutritious: "one of the world's richest sources of vitamin B" and folate, minerals etc. More importantly tastes great :) I don't care what anyone says tastes great. There would be a lot less problems in this world if people just got with the program, and started eating vegemite...sigh, oh well.

Cheers! I do also enjoy the odd Wild Turkey and coke as well, but only when in company on a saturday night of course <terrible corny laugh> <glasses chinging>.

Tov, are you sure it comes from Bundy? I haven't heard this before. Is it superstition or fact?

Its the scrapings of a vat. What else do they brew in Qld? ergo?

Dont destroy a good story with too may facts, it'll do for the Pub.

Wild Turkey , especially the higher alc/vol one, has a nasty way of creeping up on you.

Can you enlighten me, Tov, how the polar bears were originally hooked with Aussie rum? Bear vitamin?

But Tov, they produce so much Vegemite, it is a yeast extract, I am not convinced. Oh I get it, you are saying it's a pub story?

JJ, I think the Drop Bears, that live in trees in Qld, (although they do seem to be migatory),

are similar in species to Pink Elephants, ha ha

My mistake, Vegemite is the scrapings of beer (not Bundy) vats, the reminants of the brewers yeast, truely.

We just do thing differently down here.

OK you are mostly right, it is a leftover from brewing with some additives (quite a complex process though apparently):

http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/

http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/VegemiteHistory.htm

Edit-- It wasn't something they found by accident and said let's eat this. A guy set out to invent it as a practical way to eat nutritious yeast extract.

It is about time the world stopped using the $US as a benchmark currency. There has been talk of using a basket of currencies as it would be more indicative of what world trade is actually worth. As the US is now down to about third place as a producer/manufacturer, now is the time to do it.
To digress, if the WW2 POW's of the Japanese had received a teaspoon of Vegemite a month, it would have reduced the deaths by disease dramatically, Vit B's being almost non existent in the diet{sic} that these poor mistreated souls were forced to slave on.
