Why should a person invest in Gold/Silver?

Gold / Silver falls into the category of precious metals and history shows that the price of such metals is constantly increasing. Therefore, people buy these metals and after some time, they sell these on a substantial margin. Same is with Diamonds.

In a well-diversified portfolio, an invetment of 5-10% of the total portfolio is the rule of thumb for precious metals. On the other hand, if you are convinced that world currencies are going to be devalued, then maybe go for more.

Because they are precious metals and their gradual scarcity will mean their prices will keep soaring, so they will be 'appreciating' property.

If you had bought a ton of gold a few years ago at $190 per Troy ounce, you would be rich now. My crystal ball was out of order that week, or I would be, too. Boo hoo!

TL, I bought Gold 25 years ago for $A425, and sold when it rose to $A750, it was enough to buy a farm.
Then the Government brought in Capital Gains Tax, took all the fun out of it.

Indian people especially like to invest in gold but I haven't noticed anybody selling it. Young people seem to prefer silver and only for wearing. When these youngsters get married they will, more often than not, receive a lot of gold jewellery. The question is, will they keep it for investment as their parents have, grand parents etc or will they use it to buy a house or something they need? Times are changing. I don't know if this is the way it is in India, but this is my experience where I live.

With the price rise in Gold per oz that is happening now, there are buy-back operators in large stores for women to trade their jewelery for cash. I think you would need to be very aware of the gold content and weight of your asset before you sold.

Gold is better than Govt bonds .

We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.”~Swami Vivevekananda

Gold and Silver and natural occurring commodities unlike the paper currency hence, it is going to be valuable till the mankind perceives it to be...... which i believe would be till end of time.
Secondly, it acts as investment had out weighs the deterioration of currency by the menace of inflation...unlike bonds which try to help to keep purchasing power intact..
