What started as mostly peaceful rallies have turned increasingly violent, with Monday seeing some of the worst violence in the former British colony in decades after a protester was shot at close range and a man was set on fire.

Should it be "has" instead? If not, what is the reason?

Thanks.

In BE we would use "have" though, Koh.

"What started as mostly peaceful rallies have turned increasingly violent." = When the rallies (plural) began they were mostly peaceful, but now they have become violent.

Many thanks, Romany.

It seems that BE and AM often differ.

Interestingly, over the last three years those differences have suddenly surged, and the rest of the world often finds itself completely misunderstanding news that comes out of America. It's the most rapid period of change ever observed in AE.

True.
Our educational system has suffered a severe deterioration over the last 50 years. It's noticeable in many areas, especially in writing, speech, and reasoning abilities.
