Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has signed a £1.8m contract with CSC for its Medchart electronic prescribing and medicines administration system, with a planned roll-out from April next year.

please explain the use of indefinite article before "a £1.8m..." ,Does it refer to the countable noun "contract"?
Doesn't the figure £1.84m make the specific reference?

Thanks. So the amount doesn't make any difference here in terms of definite reference?
Does "a" mean there are more than one contact?

The amount is not so important. They signed "a" contract. The amount just says how much the contract is worth. It is "a" specific contract and countable because it is the only one mentioned.

"the" might be used if details, or other contracts had been mentioned, but "a" is used to show that this is one of a type. There may have been others before now, and will likely be others after this one expires.
