Yes. 'However', the only meaningful alternative, is eliminated by the comma after 'fitness'.

We need a conjunction here."however" is an adverbial.
It is what BobShilling told us.

In the following sentence, "however" works:
Moderate exercise is not the only behavioral adaptation necessary to promote physical fitness; _however_, it is a contributing factor.

Thank you Bob.

Why is the following wrong?

Moderate exercise is not the only behavioral adaptation necessary to promote physical fitness; nevertheless, it is a contributing factor.

I don't think it is actually wrong. I think now that my original suggestion that 'however' was the only meaningful alternative was a litte narrow. I do, however, think that 'nevertheless' suggests a greater contrast than is appropriate in the original sentence.

In that particular sentence, if the appropriate punctuation marks are used, I think that such words as 'but', '(al)though', and 'while' are possible. Such words/phrases as 'despite this', 'in spite of this' and 'nevertheless' are not suitable.

Moderate exercise is not the only behavioral adaptation necessary to promote physical fitness, though/but it is a contributing factor.

I try to keep things simple.
