July 22, 1959, was a momentous day in his life.
22 July 1959, was a momentous day in his life.

Is the comma after 1959 needed?

Thanks.

Some would write July 22, 1959, was a momentous day in his life.
This, with a single comma between subject and verb, is wrong: 22 July 1959, was a momentous day in his life.

I'd imply write 22 July 1959 was a momentous day in his life.

When using the month day, year format, the comma following the day number is required. (That point became lost in the confusion, I think.)
as in... July 22, 1959 was a momentous day in his life.

It is not essential in BrE.
