Plastic surgery in Western culture has gotten out of control. There are certainly people with bad noses out there, and it is their prerogative to change them if they so choose, however, when girls are getting breast implants as Sweet 16 gifts, something is very wrong with society. A recent article in Vanity Fair magazine exposes what most of us already know about the plastic surgery industry—it has gone too far. Quote:Plastic Surgery ConfidentialCosmetic surgery is now so popular that even young, healthy, attractive women are choosing to be “enhanced.” In a quest for insight into this $13 billion industry, the author—a five-foot-nine, 120-pound 27-year-old—went undercover, asking three plastic surgeons what they’d do to her nose, her breasts, and her, uh, “banana rolls.” The answers were as different as the doctors themselves.

Don't forget Tom's Rhinoplasty in South Park, where you can receive species-reassignment surgery just in case you're, say, a dolphin trapped in a human body. I approve of the legality and availability of any and all means of self-expression that one can have done to one's own body, but find the sort of advertising/media-induced body dysmorphism that supports the charlatans exposed in the VF article (I assume, since I haven't read it yet) despicable.
OK, I can recommend reading the full article. The surgeons aren't charlatans exactly, and some are better than others in the "being human" category, but it does illuminate the extent to which appearance can be turned into such a profitable enterprise.
