Hello,

Quote:
1. Dolphins have a sense similar to our sonar.
2. It sometimes helps to seek out people with similar problems to your own.
(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)

I changed the position of the adjective 'similar' and obtained the following sentences.
A. Dolphins have a similar sense to our sonar.
B. It sometimes helps to seek out people with problems similar to your own.

Q1. Do A and B have the same meaning as 1 and 2, respectively?
Q2. How does one use the patterns [a noun + similar] and [similar +a noun] properly?

Thank you.

That is an excellent question! In practice, I don't think there is any rule about it. You can do it either way. All you are doing is comparing one thing to another. In one you mention the thing that is similar, and in the other you mention the similarity of the thing. Both say the same thing: that one thing is similar (much alike but not exactly identical) to another.
