Parlous - in the UK - more often refers to things in a poor state of repair or general condition, rather than dangerous. A vehicle, house or even a sofa might be in a parlous condition.

It is actually an old contraction of 'perilous'. Nothing to do with parler, talking.

Parlous is an adjective that means "dangerous," such as the parlous car trip with a new driver behind the wheel!

The first syllable in parlous rhymes with far and is accented: "PAR-less." It means dangerous — something that is parlous might carry the risk or threat of harm, like a parlous experience of being in a boat during a rainstorm. Parlous and perilous are synonyms. In fact, parlous is a shortened version, or contraction, of perilous that came about in the late 14th century.

My first thought was, it's a cognate of "parlor". I was surprised when I saw that it means "dangerous".

Yes, that is what it looks like it should be -
palour (room for talking), parlance (way of talking), parlay (negotiate, exchange) parley (talk, negotiate under truce); parole (your word, promise); parliament. - All about talking. French parler.
Palaver (lots of fuss, talk) from Portuguese nautical slang.

So it is a bit odd, until you realise it is just a contraction/spelling variation that was made when spelling was more flexible, and this one just happened to stick.

parlous < perilous = dangerous.
