His beautiful lines on the death of his wife are a chef-d'oeuvre of mourning poetry and one of the gems of literature.

Yes, it could be jokingly misinterpreted as "eggs chef". Or "chief egg", meaning "ostrich egg", by stretching "chief" to "king, the biggest".

I had to check the etymology of "d'oeuvre"-- I had not recognized Latin "work" (opus) in it.

The university's Natural Sciences building had a colorful chef-d'oeuvre
sculpture , from renown geologist and sculptor Jean Yonne , on permanent display.
The all natural dawn-to-dusk nature scene , which depicts a weathered sky above
an agricultural landscape with surrounding seas , was extraordinarily created
solely from geological items that were discovered from all over the state by Yonne.
