Wars, especially, have been linked to egregious sexual assaults, from mass rape committed by Soviet soldiers as they advanced into Germany during World War II to sexual violence amid the genocides in Rwanda in 1995. In fact, the ubiquity of sexual assault in wars makes those crimes a category unto themselves.

.....

I also found that this phrase can be used with many other nouns, for example:

- The beauty of Sugar Mountain is in its greens, which are a game unto themselves.

- The players are pragmatic, and present each fresh stumble as an event unto itself.

- She is a category of dance unto herself.

- We are not an island unto ourselves.

I wonder what it really means to be 'a something unto itself?

Those crimes a category unto themselves: The meaning is "crimes that are totally independent as a unity/entity standing on its own". Such crimes do not follow the pattern of other crimes. In simple language, you can say that such crimes are in a class of their own.

You can now work out the intended sense in other sentences.
