Hello,

Quote:
Question
What word best describes each of the following?

Napoleon
Lincoln
Jefferson
Disraeli
Shakespeare
Einstein
Lewis Carroll

Answer
Napoleon............astute and shrewd Napoleon
Lincoln...............farsighted, sagacious Lincoln
Jefferson.............wise, discerning Jefferson
Disraeli...............keen-witted Disraeli
Shakespeare........the profound Shakespeare
Einstein..............the learned, profoundly intellectual Einstein
Lewis Carroll........the keen-witted, diverting Lewis Carroll
(Twelve ways to build a vocabulary)

I’m satisfied with the answer, but I can’t understand some of them don’t take an article while the others do. Why is it so?
Is it based on the idea of 'truly or really worth each adjective (astute, etc.)'?

Thank you

thar

There is no reason at all for these to be different.

There are times you would use no article, and times you would use an article, but that would depend on the way the sentence is constructed.

Since these are not sentences, there is really no reason to complicate things with the article.

And putting the article in some but not others is just laziness and poor editing of the question.

Anyway, the are not answering with 'which word?'. That means one word.

Most have two adjectives, some have adjectival phrases, correctly and incorrectly hyphenated. None use 'a word' to describe the person. It is just a lazily-constructed quiz.
