In British English, abbreviations Mr, Mrs, Dr and Ms do not end in a full stop. But why is Rev. the abbreviation of Reverend end in a full stop (in British English)?

Thanks.

According to Debretts and Crockfords Clerical Directory (published by the Church of England) you should use Rev or Revd without a full stop.

Abbreviations
The following abbreviations are in common use

Reverend: Revd or Rev
Father: Fr
Right Reverend: Rt Revd or Rt Rev
Prebendary: Preb
Venerable: Ven

However I think if a full stop is used it's because the title of a person is The Reverend Smith with an article.

I lack the imagination for a witty signature.
