Hi friends,

No way it would go to trial before the election, and if it turned out she didn’t do it, so what?
At least the district prosecutor, Mike, would be assured of eating at the taxpayer’s trough for another eight years.
Moron. Him and his damned tree.

Could you please help explain the word in bold? Does it mean 'donation'?

Thank you
QP

what meanings do you have for trough?

One meaning is a long container for animal feed - especially for pigs.

And, culturally, what do pigs represent? Greed - eating everything they are given, getting fat.

Quote:
have (or get)one's snout (or nose) in the trough
phrase of trough
INFORMAL•DEROGATORY
make ample use of opportunities afforded by one’s position in order to benefit oneself, especially financially.
"the expenses investigation confirmed to many that politicians have all got their noses in the trough"

So they referencing a long-established cultural joke
eg
these are not politicians, so it does not match your example. But it is a satire on the greedy pigs at the trough

or big business

or banks

and this idiom has been around a long time
the money of the hard-working people goes the the greedy pigs at the trough, who only care about themselves and how they can profit

So what is the writer trying to say?
