Hello respected teachers,

What does "hold in the same regard" mean in the following?

Yet even as Trump wages war on free speech and the first amendment, he appears to have forgotten that the only reason he holds office is the constitution itself. Trump demonstrably lost the popular vote; his legitimacy emanates solely from the provisions of the document he appears to hold in the same regard as the truth.

The custom of speaking is the original and only just standard of any language. Joseph Priestly- Rudiments of EG, 1761.

Not a comment on the truth of the paragraph . . .

It is a double implication (it does not actually SAY what Trump feels).

"The document" is the Constitution.
His legitimacy emanates from the provisions of the Constitution.

He holds the truth in a certain regard (he has an opinion about the truth).
He appears to hold the Constitution in the same regard (he has the same opinion about the constitution).

He appears to have the same opinion about the Constitution as he has about the truth.

The implication (not actually stated) is that he holds the truth in contempt - and also holds the Constitution in contempt.

Whether this is true or not is a subject for the Politics Forum - not here.

Thank you, DS.

I don't care about the truth of it.
