Cameron Carpenter is a pipe organ prodigy/virtuoso (American, born in 1981). He's the most eccentric pipe organist on this planet up to now.

Here's Chopin's Etude Op.10 n.12 "Revolutionary" (originally for piano):

Here's Carpenter's adaptation of it for organ (a more challenging way to play it):

Most living people are considered 'crazy' - they only become 'eccentric' when they die!

I would have chosen Terry Pratchett . . . Ah well.

Show me a film which is better than the book.

Jaws (the book) was originally more focused on a sexual affair than an exciting shark hunt. When it was adapted to film, the action was heightened, along with a climactic ending no one saw coming.

( Thank you :) )

Reading "EDITED to add" has spontaneously made me think of (Denis) DIDEROT /didʀo/: eDIteD aDD(ED)

Denis Diderot (1713 - 1784) was a French writer, philosopher, novelist, playwright, storyteller, dialogue writer, art critic, literary critic and translator.

From him:
“We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little at a truth we find bitter.”

Don't know exactly what happened in 1991 which would cause this in the USA. Bush and Gorbachev signed a new nuclear disarmament treaty. Freddy Mercury died. The first web browser was released. Operation Desert Storm. The USSR disappeared. Apartheid in South Africa was cancelled.
Probably the most noticed one at the time was Freddie Mercury!

Show me some really good news.

Attended elementary school but he felt alienated there and struggled with the institution's rigid pedagogical style. He also had what were considered speech challenges and was described once as 'not having learned to speak' at age five.
Had to have a private tutor in his early teens, and eventually persuaded a doctor to label him as having 'nervous exhaustion', so that he could drop out of school legally.
He finally managed to get through school to 18-year-old level by the time he was twenty-three.
As a Jew in Germany in the early days of National Socialism, he couldn't get a job in sciences or academia due to his awful record at school, and became a clerk.

Three years later, he had four papers published on three separate subjects in the field of physics and fifteen years later won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Not "the best performance" but a great one I can think of: Matt Damon's monologue in Good Will Hunting (1997):

Paris, August 4.
That day was one of the hottest ones of this summer.
I walked a lot, while staying hydrated.
I wanted to see the Eiffel Tower from an interesting viewpoint, The Trocadero Place (raised place):

Below, the Trocadero Fountain (aka the Varsaw Fountain) was working.
I walked down there, on my way to the Eiffel Tower.
I spent some time in that giant water mister. The air was much fresher there. Memorable ;)

Then I walked down and arrived near that well-know tower.

I walked even nearer but I got discouraged by the protection walls there and the numerous tourists.
I didn't have more time to spend there anyway. I had an appointment a dozen of subway stations away.

Show me something/someone you wish to see for real again.
