half-staff

(noun) A position some distance below the top of a mast to which a flag is lowered in mourning or to signal distress.

Synonyms: half-mast

Usage: Out of respect for the fallen police officer, all government buildings flew their flags at half-staff for a week.

I have never heard of the flag being at half mast being a sign of distress. What is the authority for this claim? Even if it is said somewhere, I would think it would be at best ambiguous, if not completely ineffective. Flying the flag upside down is the well known way of indicating distress.

Question authority. How do you know, that you know, what you know?

My late Nan had a saying: "Did somebody die? You're sailing at half-mast!"
Translation: It's time to go shopping for a new bra. Whistle

I'm with Epiphileon: I've never heard of sailing at half-mast as a sign of distress either.

This meaning of distress must be what was intended:

1. Anxiety or mental suffering.

So flying the flag as half-mast would indicated the distress suffered at the loss of the person who died, and not as an emergency requiring help.

Unless, of course, "half-mast" is referring to ED (Erectile Dysfunction)...Shame on you
