Hello respected teachers,

There is a giant supermarket just outside town.

Should there not be a definite article before "town" in the above since we are talking about a specific town?

I am looking forward to your answers.

This is an 'odd' one - purely a form which has come from common usage.

The normal rule would be that an article is used.

There is a giant supermarket just outside the city.
There is a giant supermarket just outside the town.
There is a giant supermarket just outside the village.

These are all correct, and you will hear it said like this.

However, 'common usage' is to omit it with 'town' - but not with 'the city' or 'the village'.

There is a giant supermarket just outside the city.
There is a giant supermarket just outside town.
There is a giant supermarket just outside the village.
I'm going to town - do you want me to buy anything for you?
I'm going to the city - do you want me to buy anything for you?
I'm going to the new cinema in town.
I'm going to the new cinema in the village.

It is such basic phrase that it has its own rules, - like going home, going to work, going to school, going into town.

It is a concept, above geography - because to the people talking to each other locally in their villages or hamlets, there is only one town!

It doesn't work for other sizes of settlement, although 'town' used to refer to London for a certain segment of society.
