caught on the hop

- I did the presentation as my boss asked me, but I was truly nervous because I was caught on the hop for that meeting.
- The market was caught on the hop by the US President today's statements made during the G7 Summit this morning when he pointed out his political comments on the NAFTA agreement.
- After last night turmoil on the game, many attendees were caught on the hop by rioters, many of which supporters of the local team, that harassed and chased them down the streets until police enforcement showed up.

I would have though that it was a baseball term, the balls hop when they hit something on the ground. And then, they can be caught on the hop.
