The implementation of the new system occurs when the old system is replaced by the new one.

There are a new of ways of implementing a new system...https://www.igcseict.info/theory/8/implem/

Please explain the use of definite article "the" before "the new system and the old system" and the indefinite article "an" before "implementing a new".

"The" is used because the sentence is speaking of "the system which you are implementing" and "the system which is being discarded".

In any specific change-over, there is only one old system and one new system.

*************
The second sentence is incorrect.
I think (guess) that the writer changed his/her mind - then edited wrongly.

It is either:
There are a few ways to implement a new system.
or
There are a number of ways to implement a new system.

"a few" and "a number" are indefinite plural determiners. "a number of" sounds more formal than "a few".

Both "to implement" and "of implementing" are correct, in different forms of sentence. I prefer "to implement" in this particular case.

There are a number of ways to implement a new system.
There are a number of methods of implementing a new system.

Thanks Drago. I am still slightly confused about "an" before implementing "a new system"
A/an: one of many
Reader/write or speaker/listener doesn't know which one
How do I understand this use with the above two basic rules for using an indefinite article?

To be honest, when one is speaking/writing about something which happens many times, it is in the mind of the speaker/writer.

Both of those sentences could be written with different articles and really mean the same.

The implementation of a new system occurs when an old system is replaced by a new one.
Here you are speaking about any one of many times, generally.

The implementation of the new system occurs when the old system is replaced by the new one.
Here you are speaking about one individual time (of many times), but using it as an example of all times.

The 'message' communicated is the same. Both are correct.
