A Tribute for All Of Us Educators..

A CEO asked a teacher a kind of rude question about her job. She responded eloquently!

The dinner guests were all sitting around the table discussing life. One man, the CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.

He argued, “What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become teacher?” To stress his point he said to another guest; “You’re a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?”

Teacher Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, ”You want to know what I make?” (She paused for second, then began…) “Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time…when their parents can’t make them sit for 5 min. without an IPod, GameCube or movie rental.

Do you really want to know what I make?” (She paused again and looked at each and every person sitting at the table) “I make kids wonder. I make them question. I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions I teach them how to write. Keyboarding isn’t everything. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their working math. They use their God given brain, not the man made calculator. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique culture identity.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.”
(Bonnie paused one last time then continued) “Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant.

You want to know what I make? I make a difference in all your lives, educating your kids, and preparing them to become CEO”S, and doctors and engineers. What do you make Mr. CEO.”
His jaw dropped and he went silent.

Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy so they know the value of things, not the price.

Absolutely wonderful, hedy!!...Applause Applause Applause Applause Applause

If only all teachers felt that way. I'm sure many do, but are frustrated by the restrictions they are under.

Thanks, hedy!
What an apt answer.

(I've been an educator, too ;-)

That was really nice, Hedy. Thanks.

Its a fact that in the flow of materialism, the noble work of a teacher is being undermined. In my country, a teacher is always revered. There is a saying that a teacher is greater than God Himself. One owes everything in his life, even the life, to his teacher.
But unfortunately, the materialism has grown so much that people have started devaluing this respectable profession.

Wow...Jyrkkä Jätkä YOU ARE my twin ;) ...I taught at a university, I'm a sharpshooter, deer hunter, fisherman, artist, fashion designer, printer, jeweler, an aviator (with a small 'a', cause I couldn't keep up with the flying time requirements, because of 9/11 and my mom's worries)..."I'm a Jack of all trades and a master of all" (and for the grammatically/politically correct, "I'm a Jane of all trades and a master of all" EEK)

I'm duly impressed with your vast knowledge!..."You're a Jack of all trades and a master of all"

Thank you, you are one of the few TFDers who appreciates this kind of thread. There are many 'teachers' in TFD, and one, by her own admission, did not require her students to have a textbook! So this thread probably went over her head...just as well!

(yes, DragOnspeaker, you were right, I do have a male twin in Finland...go figure)

Thank you, Foundit, TMe and srirr...I truly enjoy the remnant responding to my posts!

BTW Truth be told, sadly, my twin sister Sonja transitioned at 15 yrs old, 55 yrs ago...so trying to find a twin is not that far fetched. I still have to respond to [b]you
and [b]DragOnspeaker
on my thread about health, I've just been a bit busy with deadlines at work.

[b]It's just that today, for some reason, I decided to wear my "Smarty Pants" and not my "Fancy Pants"...and post!

I feel good reading it because I have been a teacher already.

We can't deny that teachers are not as valorized as they used to be.
Maybe when people realize that they couldn't be doctors nor engineers if a teacher hadn't taught them to be one, then we will make progress.

I missed this (I've been off the internet for a few days).

I'm not a trained teacher - never went to teacher-training college - but I have worked in some sort of role helping students understand and be able to use what they're studying for half of my life, in one way or another.

My opinion is that almost everyone who decides to be a teacher wants to help the students, wants to give knowledge.
If they are improperly taught HOW to teach, they fail - and so can begin to feel they're doing wrong, become cynical and so on. However, they generally really want to help.

Anyone who can show someone how to study - how to USE the materials they read and live better, more efficiently, more ethically - is a genius, really.
It seems that modern teacher-training specialises more in the administration of a class, the organisation of it, than in the education done in the class.
Teachers seem to be taught how to 'psychologise' rather than help the students enjoy learning and enjoy using what they learn in life.

Children are able to take responsibility for larger and larger parts of their lives from the moment they begin to understand a few words.
Someone who can show them how, stand back while the child tries, then show them how again if they fail (without giving the impression that the students are WRONG - just that there is more to know) will help the students succeed in life.
Someone who tries just to make them memorise data will fail. (Though there are some things you have to memorise).
