genus
noun [ C ] UK /ˈdʒiː.nəs/ US /ˈdʒiː.nəs/ plural genera specialized

a group of animals or plants, more closely related than a family, but less similar than a species

Please explain the above definition to me in a simpler way.

Thanks.

When you classify plants and animals, the smallest classification is a species
Above this is a genus - similar species which are closely related, but not the same animal or plant.
The scientific name for an organism, like Homo sapiens, gives the genus with a capital letter and the species with a small letter.

Eg the black rat is Rattus rattus. The brown rat is Rattus norvegicus. They are different species (they don't interbreed to produce fertile young) but they are close relatives, in the same genus.

The grey wolf and domestic dog are in the same genus - Canis - but are different species - Canis lupus is a wolf and Canis familiaris is a dog.

Because it is a Latin word in the third declension it has a plural -era. Like
Opus, opera; genus, genera

That is what they mean by "specialised" - it is only used in this context in biology

But one related word is 'generic' medicines - which are not the exact same drug but related ones that have the same effect, only because they are not parented they are cheaper.

And the adjectives
specific - only one thing
generic - similar. In a bad way, like generic music where all the songs sound so alike you can't tell them apart! Whistle
