Hi. Can you explain to me what "to whale on me in the open" is meaning.
The text in kids book:

I headed to the empty courts, figuring I could hit against the green monster and score some points with Guy if he saw me practicing. Plus, it would be harder for the goons to whale on me in the open. I hoped.
