Hi, can you help me understand what "across" is meaning. The text in my book is:

A man walked across a ridge on the rocks.

Which picture is correct, 1 or 2?

Thanks.

The guy in pic 1 is going along the ridge. The second guy is going across - the valley in the ridge.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Hi!

A cross is this shape.

There are two lines.

in your sentence, the ridge is one line and your direction of travel is the other.

DragOnspeaker, I'm not completely sure what you are meaning. Do you hint that "across" is meaning travel in all directions?

A picture is better.

Here is Northover Ridge.

As you can see, it is a line of peaks with low ground on each side.

Those walkers are walking along the ridge - they are going in the same direction as the line of peaks - north to south.

If someone climbed up from the left, over the top and went down the right side, they would be going across the ridge - west to east.

Like the X sign.
The ridge is one line and the direction of travel is ninety degrees to it.
