In Norse mythology, the valkyries are maidens sent by Odin to select worthy warriors slain in battle. Valkyries, whose name is derived from an Old Norse word meaning "choosers of the slain," are said to have the power to cause the death of warriors they dislike or guard the lives of those they favor. Valkyrie:
- A warlike lady, with varies abilities, among which flying and fight.
- They have varies rules in different branches of the Norske and Nord mythology and initially were regarded as demons responsible to carry the dead warriors to hell, but lately, they were shaped into angellike form and yet responsible to draw the deceased warriors to Valhalla, the heaven for the warriors.
- They have been depicted in many writing works such as poetry, prose, old mythological studies, and even in old pagan praying books.
- Over the times, they have been playing roles in varies artworks. Richard Wagner dedicated an entire series of operas and symphonies telling stories about the old Norks mythology, by employing characters like Valkyries. The most famous piece is called The Ride of The Valkyries.
- Recently, Marvel Comics launched the third movie of Thor's franchise regarding the Ragnarok Event, described in details in Wagner's operas and other literary works, that made a beautiful reference to those war-girls.
